We counted the code footprints that analytics and tag tools leave in page source, across the August 2026 SearchWebCode index of roughly 129 million unique-domain homepages. Each count is a verified substring match against the stored source, not an extrapolated estimate, and the populations overlap, so the rows can't be summed.

What stands out
GA4's loader is the single most common analytics footprint at 9.6 million domains, ahead of the GTM container it often rides in (7.4M). Universal Analytics code still sits on 4.6 million homepages even though Google stopped collecting UA data in 2023, a large population of un-migrated or abandoned installs, and a useful fingerprint for dating a site's last maintenance. Among session-replay tools, Microsoft Clarity (free) shows up on about 1.6× as many domains as Hotjar.

Every count we publish is verified against stored page source: an exact match count where the engine can prove one, otherwise an estimate scaled from a verified sample of real pages, never a survey extrapolation. The exact footprint appears next to each number so any claim can be re-run as a search and checked result by result. Reports are tied to a dated index build; when a new build changes the numbers, we update the page and move the modified date above. Corrections are made in place.
